Goodby HostGator

I moved my last domain off Hostgator today, and asked them to close my account. I still believe that, in general, hostgator is a decent hosting company, but I asked them twice to fix the problems with the server I was on and they pretty much denied it or ignored me. I wasn’t going to ask them a third time so I moved about 20 domains to my account at 1and1.com.

Now 1and1.com has their own problems. There is no perfect hosting company. At least the response time that I get on my 42 domains is snappy. I hate their Java based interface. I much prefer CPANEL. I have to install AWSTATS on each domain (I have a script available here that takes the pain out of that).

Now I have all my eggs in one basket, which is a problem, but I save $100 a year on hosting costs.

I had epxerienced the same other way round.
I moved 40+ domains from 1 and 1 to hostgator a few years back.
I started off my IM with 1 and 1 and they are good as far as blogs/sites which are of limited usage, that is less traffic and less visitor interface uses etc.
Hostgator is a neat company as long as your sites dont require extensive monitoring, the moment you step into that arena you are better off taking a server from them and having an admin monitor everything, this is my personal opinion though. But both hosts have good uptime, though i will rate hostgator customer service to be better in responding quickly.

I am using 1and1. No cpanel and a frustrating control panel written in java that runs like molasses. They have severe limits on php execution time and memory.

On the plus side, they are up almost all the time and I run 40 sites on the one account without problems and near perfect up time.

    The price is right.

I would never expect them to anything out of the ordinary. About as fancy as I get is to run a whole bunch of cron jobs. 1and1 seems to have few restrictions as to what I can do in a cron job.

Hmmm – HG is snobbish in their own way. They are good for clueless website owners; for someone who asks them intricate stuff they find that irritating I think.

But theye rescued me twice rom hackings and all … Dreamhost is not a third as good …

Any suggestions for cPanel VPN hosting, Keith? That doesnt cost me like $40 a month?

    Thx…

I’m surprised you had a problem with hostgator that they could not resolve! I have never had a problem they could not handle. I guess there is a first time for everything. Good luck with 1and1.

P.S. I also use site5 and they are awesome as well. I highly recommend them for hosting.
